About the Lab
The Gender, Culture, and Health Lab, headed by Dr. Derek Iwamoto, is dedicated to examining the intersections of culture, race/ethnicity, gender, substance use, and mental health outcomes among minority groups. Our research team focuses on addressing health disparities in under-represented, and under-served groups including African Americans and Asian-Americans. We are concerned with how socio-cultural factors influence the development of alcohol related problems in these groups, as well as how this research can be used to improve and develop substance abuse treatments and interventions for at-risk ethnic and racial minority adolescents and adults.
Prospective
Grad Students
Pending funding, I plan on recruiting a doctoral student for the 2025-26 academic year. I am looking for a dedicated, driven and passionate student who is primarily interested in racial identity development, gender socialization (e.g., belief, expectations of what it means to be a man or woman), and alcohol use among Asian Americans and other ethnic minorities.
